In North America, roughly 50% of an animal is considered inedible.Rendering recycles 99% of the meat we don’t eat, transforming unused animal materials like fat, bone, blood, feathers and certain internal organs into valuable and safe ingredients used in livestock feed, pet food, biofuels, industrial goods and personal care products.
Without rendering, those unused animal products wouldn’t just go to waste; they’d take a massive toll on our resources and way of life. According to the North American Renderers Association, if all renderable products were sent to landfills, capacity would be overwhelmed in just four years.
Another big benefit of rendering is water conservation. Rendering reclaims around 3.7 billion gallons of water that would otherwise be wasted, returning it to streams and rivers. Rendering also reduces the grease and oil that clog sewer and wastewater systems, supporting water quality for our cities and communities.
Rendering respects the animal by using all of it, saving precious landfill space and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the process. Today, rendering is more important than ever, and contemporary processes are used to support that ongoing commitment to sustainability.
